Basic Function

Reporting to the University Librarian, provides leadership and management of the library’s Impact & Innovation Department. Responsible for delivering high-impact instructional and learning services, high quality information resources and discovery services, and innovative uses of technology and assessment strategies, that advance WPI research, instruction, community engagement, and other library programs and initiatives. Provides guidance and mentorship for a team of diverse and skilled professionals, including eight librarians and one staff associate, in addition to student assistants. Serves as a senior member of the Gordon Library’s Leadership Team and collaborates with WPI academic, administrative, and IT programs, centers, and staff.

Principal Duties and Responsibilities

Principal Duty and Responsibility

Provides innovative leadership for library programs and services that deliver effective experiences of high-impact learning, and high quality information and data discovery services, both within and across disciplines.

Leads the library’s contributions through instruction, information, and other services, to advance project-based learning as a distinctive learning strategy in which WPI is an acknowledged global leader.

Leads library staff in developing effective digital interfaces and experiences for library users, including the library’s public web presence, web-based asset management and discovery systems, and other web-based library services and functions

Provides guidance and mentorship for a team of diverse and skilled professionals, including eight librarians and one staff associate, in addition to student assistants. Provides overall direction for a group of staff with diverse and complementary expertise and perspectives to fulfill the goals of the department. Supervises and mentors personnel both as individuals and as a team, in an environment that strongly supports lifelong professional development and growth, through research, service, continuing education, and identification of career-enhancing special assignments and responsibilities.

Principal Duty and Responsibility

Leads programs and projects that assess, develop, plan and implement innovative technologies that help library users and library staff achieve higher impact, and collaborates to plan, design, develop, deliver, and assess the library’s digital media and digital scholarship services.

Aligns departmental planning, priorities, goals, objectives and services with strategic initiatives of the Gordon Library and WPI, including support for the university’s Innovation & Entrepreneurship (I&E) initiative through partnership with the Innovation Studio to design and sustain active learning and team skills and literacies in developing solutions and carrying out research projects.

Coordinates a comprehensive and integrated assessment and impacts program, including leading library assessment staff in documenting, analyzing, communicating, and enhancing the library impacts on users’ goals; assessing how information resources and interfaces meet user needs; and providing services that support WPI researchers and faculty in communicating, measuring, and enhancing the impact of their research and creative work.

Maintains a current understanding of best practices, current trends, and new technologies that support the goals of the department.

Position Requirements

Requirement

At least five years of successful supervisory, management and leadership experience in an academic library.

Requirement

At least two years experience delivering or leading library instructional services in an academic library, demonstrating understanding of best practices in creating high-impact learning experiences that advance student and researcher information literacies, including digital and scholarly communication literacies.

Requirement

Demonstrated expertise in developing information resources and discovery services that address the needs of the research and teaching university.

Requirement

Demonstrated skills to lead, direct, and support web design staff.

Requirement

Experience in applying innovative library technologies.

Requirement

The ability to articulate vision, set direction, and accomplish initiatives in a rapidly changing environment.

Requirement

Demonstrated understanding of changes in academic library research trends, and the ability to analyze, implement and adapt to evolving services and technologies.

Excellent organizational skills and effectiveness in balancing multiple assignments and projects.

Master’s degree in library science or equivalent degree, or appropriate equivalent experience.

Requirement

Preferred qualifications:

1. Experience supporting curricular and research needs in STEM disciplines including interdisciplinary or polytechnic research and teaching.
2. Experience with using the functions of an integrated library services platform such as Alma.
3. Successful digital project management experience.
4. Successful experience as a mentor or facilitator.
5. Successful experience in grant writing.
6. Experience with budget planning.
7. Experience with data analysis and communicating data using tools such as Excel and Tableau.
